For me there is something quite decadent about going out for a leisurely breakfast. It’s one of my many guilty pleasures. And why not, we’re spoiled for choice in Edinburgh with a plethora of cafes and restaurants providing diners with great breakfast ideas, far more appealing than a bowl of cornflakes.
On what was a bright sunny day I decided to indulge. Edinburgh was looking mighty fine and spring had definitely sprung. A walk along the Water of Leith into Stockbridge took me to The Pantry, which is now an established feature on the Stockbridge eating scene. Showcasing Scotland’s larder you’ll be guaranteed loacally sourced, seasonal goodness at it’s very best whether you’re after breakfast, lunch or dinner.
To get me off the starting blocks I had to have a flat white. And they nailed it. As an aside coffee fanatics will be delighted to know The Pantry is flying the Artisan Roast flag. So this relationship is already off to a great start.
Now admittedly I am predictable. Whether I’m at home or away, or whether it’s January or July I have to have a bowl of porridge to kick start my day. This porridge wasn’t disappointing either. Plus they’ll make it however you would like it made. Made with milk with a good drizzle of honey this certainly was a step up from my porridge.
I opted for a smaller bowl as I had to explore what else was on the varied breakfast menu, which changes weekly. So next on my hit list was the poached egg on toast with East Lothian foraged mushrooms and crispy pancetta. Pretty on the eye it was also pretty darn tasty. The eggs were poached to perfection for my preference – lovely and runny. The mushrooms were gorgeous and the pancetta added a subtle salty taste to the dish. Rounding things of with a pot of tea this was a breakfast for champions.
What’s more the relaxed ambience and friendly service really adds to its appeal. You actually feel you’re sitting in someone’s very own kitchen in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. Armed with my papers I could easily have stretched breakfast into lunch!
The Chief Taster missed a treat, but given the selection of cakes also on display I think I could be persuaded to drag him back to raid The Pantry again!
